Itchy Dogs and Hot Spots

If your dog is itchy, they can develop hot spots. Hot spots are no fun for dogs. The sooner they are treated, the better for your furbaby.
In case you are unfamiliar with “hot spots”, they are hot, red, itchy spots on a dog’s body. “Hot spots” can be caused by allergies, health-related issues, fleas, environmental causes, food allergies, matted or dirty fur, or frequent exposure to moisture. When dogs have itchy skin, they lick and scratch themselves repeatedly to relieve the discomfort, causing “hot spots” or sores on their skin. If “hot spots” are left untreated, an infection could occur. The sooner you treat them, the better.

If detected early enough, bathing and topical treatments could be used in home care, however If at any time your dog’s symptoms do not ease or if symptoms become worse, call your veterinarian.

​Bathing and Topical Treatments

​Keeping your pet clean is a good first step in easing itchiness. Regular bathing is good for your dog and rinses allergens off the skin.

Prevent Reinjury

To prevent scratching, biting, chewing or reinjuring the hot spot, an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) should be worn by your dog. We recommend the more comfortable inflatable E-collar as opposed to the traditional clear plastic “cone of shame”. In our experience, dogs generally seem more comfortable and less stressed when wearing the inflatable E-collar. The E-collar should be worn until the hot spot is healed.

Daily Care

Trim the fur around the hot spot. Clean the area daily using a washcloth and a small amount of hydrating dog body wash and water. Rinse well and dry with a towel. Apply the topical treatment daily according to the directions. The hot spot should begin to heal, becoming less red every day until it is completely healed.
