If your dog is itchy, they can develop hot spots. Hot spots are no fun for dogs. The sooner they are treated, the better for your furbaby.
In case you are unfamiliar with “hot spots”, they are hot, red, itchy spots on a dog’s body. “Hot spots” can be caused by allergies, health-related issues, fleas, environmental causes, food allergies, matted or dirty fur, or frequent exposure to moisture. When dogs have itchy skin, they lick and scratch themselves repeatedly to relieve the discomfort, causing “hot spots” or sores on their skin. If “hot spots” are left untreated, an infection could occur. The sooner you treat them, the better.
If detected early enough, bathing and topical treatments could be used in home care, however If at any time your dog’s symptoms do not ease or if symptoms become worse, call your veterinarian.
Bathing and Topical Treatments
Keeping your pet clean is a good first step in easing itchiness. Regular bathing is good for your dog and rinses allergens off the skin.
A good bath using high quality hydrating dog body wash or itch relief dog body wash and conditioner, soothes your dog and eases itching. Topical treatments such as Spina Organics Miracolo Oil Hot Spot Treatment provide relief and begin the healing process.
To prevent scratching, biting, chewing or reinjuring the hot spot, an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) should be worn by your dog. We recommend the more comfortable inflatable E-collar as opposed to the traditional clear plastic “cone of shame”. In our experience, dogs generally seem more comfortable and less stressed when wearing the inflatable E-collar. The E-collar should be worn until the hot spot is healed.
Trim the fur around the hot spot. Clean the area daily using a washcloth and a small amount of hydrating dog body wash and water. Rinse well and dry with a towel. Apply the topical treatment daily according to the directions. The hot spot should begin to heal, becoming less red every day until it is completely healed.
Recently, our chocolate Labrador retriever, Abbie became itchy and developed a hot spot. Thankfully, we caught it early and were able to treat her at home. We used Spina Organics Itch Relief Dog Body Wash and Fur Detangler Leave-In Conditioner to soothe and cleanse her fur. We trimmed the fur around the hot spot and kept it clean. Daily application of Spina Organics Miracolo Oil eased her itching as she healed. She wore an inflatable E-collar to prevent reinjury. After a few days, Abbie’s hot spot was healed.

Our family is blessed with two dogs, Ellie and Abbie, that live inside with us. They are such a fun part of our family. Their fur feels fresh and clean most days and they smell great even between baths, but it was not always this way…
In the years before we opened our business, Ellie’s Pet Supply, we would bathe our dogs at home with whatever pet shampoo was available at our local big box store. Within a week of bathing, our dogs would smell like they needed another bath. Their “doggy smell” never left, and we were becoming “nose blind” to it. We cleaned frequently, used deodorizers and fragrant candles to try to mask pet odors, especially before we had visitors. All these efforts were to no avail.
Then we met Mauro Spina (pronounced Spee-nah, because it is Italian), one of the founders of Spina Organics, at a pet products trade show. Spina Organics had just been voted number 1 for having the cleanest ingredients. At Ellie’s Pet Supply, we are all about clean ingredients, the best, safest products for pets. Mauro and his wife Snaiga, originally from Southern Italy, founded Spina Organics “to produce the best, all-natural range of pet care products”. During Mauro’s childhood, in a small village of Puglia, in Southern Italy, his grandmother, Sabina Rinelli, patiently taught him to “make the most of what nature has to offer”. Now located in Beverly Hills, California, the Spina’s use their knowledge of plants and botanical extracts to make Spina Organics grooming products for pets. They are passionate about using only the best, cleanest ingredients for pets.
At the trade show, Mauro gave us some samples of Spina Organics Hydrating Dog Body Wash, Fur Detangler Leave-In Conditioner and Lavender Fur Refresher to take home with us. As soon as we used these products on our dogs, we noticed why these products were voted number 1 for Cleanest Grooming Products. Let me just say that all previous dog shampoos we had used before were thick and goopy, extremely sudsy, hard to rinse, and had an “overwhelming perfume” scent. Spina Organics Grooming Products are altogether dramatically different from grooming products we had previously used.
Overall, since we started using Spina Organics grooming products, our dogs’ fur feels and smells fresh and clean between baths. The “doggy smell” in our home is gone! Our dogs are clean and happy and so are we. We’re happy that we can groom our dogs with healthy organic products and that they feel and smell great.
